s05 Charlie (WW1)
Charles Smart was born 8th June 1889, the 5th child of Elijah and Mary Smart. Charles attended the Burkes Pass Primary School. He worked on many Mackenzie runs (farms).
While ploughing on Simons Hill he unearthed a Maori greenstone ornament which is now in the Canterbury Museum.
During WW1 whilst returning to Mt Cook Station (farm) he received his call-up notice. Looking at Andrew Burnett, he passed over his mustering stick saying
“I will pick this up when I return”.
Sadly this was not the case. Aged 28 he was wounded in Palestine and died 31st March 1918. He is buried at the Damascus War Cemetery in Syria – ref D68 if you visit.
On the grave . . .
Oh for a glimpse of the grave where you’re laid
only to lay a flower at your head. Mother.
