SMART Mary (Greig)
OUR SCOTTISH HERITAGE
Mary Greig, our Scottish link, was from the Mackenzie clan area of Scotland.
Mary Greig came from Applecross Scotland. She emigrated to NZ via London 29th August 1874 as a passenger on the ‘Pleiades’ arriving into Lyttelton 16th December 1874.
This photo I believe to be Mary’s grandfather.
Mary Greig was the only child of Thomas Greig and Mary Mackenzie. An Old Parochial Record, (OPR), gives her birthdate as 25 DECEMBER 1854 in Applecross, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.
Her father, Thomas, (re) married Ann McLennan on 24 March 1864 and had two children, a son John born 28 May 1865 and a daughter Eliza born 11 July 1867.
Mary is on the Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty Census in 1861 living with her Grandparents William and Peggy Greig, and on the Locharron, Ross and Cromarty Census in 1871 living with her father Thomas, her step-mother Ann and her two half siblings, John and Eliza.
A belief was that Mary did not get on very well with her step-mother and this may have contributed to her decision to emigrate with the Bain family to NZ.
